The journal MATERIALE SI CERCETARI ARHEOLOGICE was founded in 1954 by the Vasile Parvan Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest, under the auspices of the Romanian Academy. His initial aim was to publish yearly preliminary reports of all the archaeological excavation in Romania. This practice continued over a number of years (11 volumes published), more or less regularly. The last three volumes were published with great delays, due to the difficulty in receiving the contributions from all over the country in a suitable form. The volume IX was also prepared, but has not yet been published. Starting from 1973, this publication was prepared by the National Archaeological Commission within the Ministry of Culture; four other issues appeared, also with great delays and in improper conditions. Their contents were the preliminary reports presented at the Annual Meetings of Archaeological Reports. The last number, published in 1994, contained a part of the reports presented at the Annual Meeting from 1983! Since 1995, the National Archaeological Commission replaced MATERIALE SI CERCETARI ARHEOLOGICE with CRONICA CERCETARILOR ARHEOLOGICE DIN ROMANIA. This publication contains the abstracts of all the archaeological reports presented at the Annual Meetings of Archaeological Reports. In the same time, the Scientific Council of the Vasile Parvan Archaeological Institute decided to restart his old publication, this time in a new series.

The New Series of MATERIALE SI CERCETARI ARHEOLOGICE intends to publish larger and more elaborated archaeological reports, either final or representative for a certain stage of the research. Rescue excavation reports are also accepted, if they are final and representative for a definite aspect of the research. The advantages of these reports are obvious, as not all the archaeological excavations are suitable for a monographic form of publication. In the meantime they may be considered a basic publication. The journal is open to all archaeologists in Romania and the Moldova Republic, provided the publication rules be observed.
