The journal STUDII SI CERCETARI DE ISTORIE VECHE SI ARHEOLOGIE (SCIVA), formerly (until 1973) STUDII SI CERCETARI DE ISTORIE VECHE (SCIV), was founded in 1950 by the Romanian Academy. It is now published in one volume per year, consisting of 4 issues (1-2 and 3-4), with a total average number of 200 pages.
The journal publishes original contributions about the prehistory, protohistory, the Graeco-Roman and the Medieval periods of the Romanian area and of the neighbouring countries, based on the study of the written sources and, particularly, on the archaeological finds from these parts of Europe. The epigraphic and numismatic finds are always welcome. Depending on their nature, the articles are grouped into the permanent sections of the journal: studies, discussions, fieldwork, small finds. Occasionally, thematic issues are published, containing articles presented at colloquia of the Archaeological Institute Vasile Parvan. Each year the journal publishes a chronicle of the excavations of the Institute, reviews of other scientific activities and manifestations, and the epigraphical chronicle of Romania. The journal also publishes book reviews and bibliographical notes for recent publications from Romania and abroad.
The articles are usually published in Romanian, accompanied by abstracts in languages of international use. In recent years SCIVA has also started to publish articles in foreign languages, preferably in English or French; some articles have been translated from German and Russian into Romanian. The manuscripts are reviewed by the members of the editorial board who assess their originality, the adequacy of data considered, the quality of the inquiry and the conformity with the editorial norms published in SCIVA 46, 1995, 3-4. p. 343-371.
The journal is intended for Romanian and foreign scholars interested in the study of antiquity: historians, archaeologists, epigraphists, numismats, historians of art and architecture. To facilitate their access to the rich historical and archaeological information published during 50 years (more than 26200 printed pages, with more than 2500 titles signed by almost 500 authors), the editorial board took care of the publishing, in SCIVA 36, 1985, 1-2, p. 31-177 and 46, 1995, 3-4 p. 299-342, of indices of modern authors, geographical names and subjects.
SCIVA, with its semestrial issues edited by the oldest and most important Romanian institution of archaeological research, closely reflects the dynamics and directions of the research at the national level. This explains the great number of institutions and research libraries from all over the world (more than 200) interested in maintaining the exchanges with this journal.
