FOREX MARKET
On Friday, there was released the US New Home Sales which fell sharply to 1080k vs. 1200k expected, triggering a quick
rebound for the EUR/USD to the levels posted the day before until 1.2050. The most important event of the week ahead
will definitely be the FOMC minutes on Tuesday with a an expected 25bps rate hike and the post meeting statement seems
to be key now for the USD. We will look for signs of a peak in the current interest rate cycle which would likely send the
pair for another test of 1.2200. One member of ECB member declared that the central bank had made it quite clear that its
emphasis lied in maintaining price stability. He said moderate inflation expectations were vital for monetary policy to
support economic growth.
The Romanian currency firmed up on Friday, as most of the trading day it was traded in the 3.5050-3.5100 area with short
moves above these levels. On March 27th, the opening bids stood around 3.5100, however the exchange rate moved
towards 3.5000 support area until noon time. The trading is calm for the moment as the players are waiting for the press
conference to be held by the governor of NBR at 3p.m. when there will be announced the monetary policy rate. In this
respect, the views are divided, however we expect the rate to remain flat until May 11th, when it should take place the next
meeting of the Administration Board of NBR.
MONEY MARKET
The ON interest rates maintained high in the 8-9% zone on Monday, the more so as there is taking place a depo auction
today at the 8.5% fixed rate.
Starting March 23rd, Finansbank has hiked again its interest rates, offering for several maturities the best yields in the
market both for RON and EUR deposits.
