FOREX MARKET
On Monday, the Ron steadily gained ground against the Euro, as selling orders were a constant presence in the
market. The EUR/RON opened the day at 3.64 and then slid to a minimum of 3.6290 before closing slightly
higher at 3.6320.
Today the move continues. The pair was quoted at the beginning of the trading session at 3.6330 and then
went down to 3.6250-70. The support at 3.62 is instrumental in the way to 3.60 and this is the first time in
2006 we are seeing it tackled.
The EUR/USD has consolidated in the past 24 hours in the 1.2270-1.2320 range. The price of oil has given
back some of the gains after the easing of geopolitical tensions over Iran. Therefore, fresh incentives are
needed to drive the pair towards 1.25, which is decisive for the trend of the rate in the first half of 2006.
MONEY MARKET
Yesterday O/N interest rates had given back another 25 basis points to bids of 0.75%. Today however, banks
are paying 3.5-4% on the interbank market for O/N RON deposits, as the new NBR reserve period has started
and therefore demand for funds has risen accordingly. The O/Ns are offered at 6-7%.
