FOREX MARKET
The Leu initially stood its ground against the Euro yesterday as the EUR/RON rate moved little away from 3.6520 in
the first trading hours. In the second half of the trading day the EUR/RON soared from 3.6530 to 3.6670. Afterwards,
the euro gave back just as fast most of the gains and the pair closed at 3.6550.
The Euro was valued today initially at RON 3.6560 and gradually decreased to a low of 3.6510 before stabilizing at
3.6540. As the clients of the banks are trading at year high volumes, commercial flows will have a major impact on
the EUR/RON market in the next few days. On December 20th, sales and purchases of clients stood at EUR 553 mio,
EUR 552 mio respectively, the highest values recorded so far in 2005.
On Wednesday the EUR/USD rate broke through the 1.1850 support both on technical reasons and as the released
economic data confirmed the solid growth of the US economy in Q3. The Euro plunged from 1.1880 to as low as
1.1798. Today in European trading the pair looks more stable, hovering around 1.1825, with 1.1800 as the next
support.
MONEY MARKET
Short term rates continue their slide on the RON money market. After yesterday RON O/N rates have decreased from
3.5/5.5% to 2/4%, today bids stand at 1% and the offer at 3.5-4%. Although the Central bank has recently made a vow
to fight inflation, its commitment is yet unclear, considering the RON surplus on the market.
