FOREX MARKET
On October 14th, there were released important data on the US economy, giving us a sentiment of weakening USD in
the medium term. The US Advanced Retail Sales except auto for September soared to 1.1% vs. 0.8% expected, while
core CPI reached 0.1% vs. 0.2% expected. The positive figures were darkened by the Michigan Consumer confidence
which fell to 75.4 vs. 76.9 in September and 79.4 expected, revealing a lack of rebound that suggests that consumers
remain worried about high energy prices. On this background, the EUR/USD fell as low as 1.1975, however it then
recovered more than 100 pips and we set the first resistance at 1.2100.
There has been a good week for the euro which appreciated against the RON, on the back of buying orders coming
from the speculative clients who are closing their positions. The EUR/RON soared as high as 3.6210 on Friday,
however by the time of closing, the exchange rate fell to 3.6050. On Monday, the pair was quoted at 3.6080 at the
beginning of the trading session and it remained at the same level until noon, with low variations.
MONEY MARKET
On October 17th, the Central Bank doesn't intend to withdraw any liquidity from the local money market. The yields
paid for the overnight deposits stood still at 0.5-1.5% on the inter-bank market, as the commercial banks didn't
succeed yet to place the whole domestic currency surplus in RON denominated loans.
