FOREX MARKET
The consolidation period of the EUR/RON has continued in the beginning of this week. Yesterday the market
has traded in the 3.54-3.56 range, closing at 3.55 after a trading session marked by low activity. The volumes
seem to have decreased significantly compared to last week, when the average value of inter-bank daily trades
stood at EUR 278 millions, with many of the players opening short positions. Today the trading range has
narrowed to 3.54-3.55. The EUR/RON opened at 3.5480 and is now quoted at 3.5430, touching just briefly the
limits of the range.
The USD is consolidating versus the Euro before attempting to break out of a 12-months head and shoulders
formation. The 1.1870-1.1900 area must be considered decisive in the mid-term for the pair. There are no major
indicators published today, but investors will be looking to see if a 1.1870-1.20 range is established or the USD
will further continue appreciating.
MONEY MARKET
The recent cuts in RON-denominated credits have been matched by similar reductions in RON-deposits interest
rates. The average interest rate offered by commercial banks for 3-months deposits has fallen for the first time
below 6%, to 5.94%. The main reason can be found on the inter-bank market, where O/N interest rates stood
on Monday at 0.5/1.5%. The Central Bank will not hold any deposit auctions today.
